How to find motor
insurers online
Here,
we will argue that the best way to find motor insurers is not via this
country's favourite route - that is, a price comparison system. The
best way to get cover is, in fact, to use the more old-fashioned but
tried and tested approach of going direct. Why do we stick our necks
out and swim against the tide of popular opinion on this issue? Well,
as it turns out, there are good reasons as we'll explain here.
Price comparison sites are good at finding you cheap quotes but that's
all that they do well. Ask most people buying through them if they know
what they've actually got for their money and they'll stare at you
blankly or possibly mutter that it doesn't matter because they've saved
a fortune on their renewal quote.
It does matter, of course, because price comparison sites are victims
of their own success and great power. Many of these sites will now
compare thousands of quotes for popular car models; so when you buy the
cheapest, you're buying the cheapest of thousands of policies. If you
buy one such policy, you've basically signing up to major personal
expense if you do have an accident; as, it's cheap for a reason - the
insurer has passed much of the costs back to you.
If the cheapest quote is best avoided, which should be considered for
purchase? The third cheapest, perhaps, or maybe the tenth cheapest? It
becomes very arbitrary until you begin to base your policy choice on
the cover you want rather than being seduced by an appealing price.
And, of course, once you start scrutinising the associated cover, price
comparison sites tend not to offer enough detail, while the number of
policies presented tends to confuse rather than clairify.
You get around all of this when you go direct, as, quality is generally
built-in in terms of the standard of cover on offer from the biggest
car insurance providers. You won't get the sky-high excess of the
cheapest policies while useful features such as a protected no claims
or courtesy car are often available.
If you feel put off going direct owing to pricing worries, don't be.
these big companies carefully watch competitors' pricing for similar
policies and they invariably match or beat them. Thus, similar policies
from the major insurers are always closely priced. You really don't
need to get overly focused on price issues when you choose on the basis
of cover from large direct car
insurance providers.
